    I can sympathize about the seagulls. In any big city, you've got to deal with pigeons, unless you're near water, in which case seagulls are bigger, a lot noisier, and produce a lot more poop. We have a ton of them in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

    I don't see the appeal for this as NAS. I guess if you need it for content creation.. but NVME all NASs would give me enough storage. So at that point run a single system with 2 pools. For a basic 2-4TB NVME nas its wayyy overkill

    Everyone loves Synology DSM and I agree it's rock solid, but don't confuse customer preference with consumer affordability. UGREEN is providing an amazing product and although the software is currently not up to par, doesn't mean consumers will not give it a strong consideration based on hardware alone. UGREEN has a considerable following and trust base from all the many other cable and products we've purchased from them over the years. I'm willing to purchase their device in good faith that software will improve and knowing I'll install Truenas on it until it does without losing my warranty. I can promise you Synology is waiting to see 1st and 2nd quarter sales report from UGREEN. They are waiting just like all the cellular companies waited for reports of Cricket Wireless when it first rolled out with Unlimited wireless plans and changed the market. Synology DSM is great, but a year from now, will it be great enough for me to pay double the cost for considerably less hardware vs UGREEN? I believe Synology prices will eventually drop.

      x4 card won't fit, there are two variants one with 4 slots on one side and it's to tall, and second with two ports per side and that one collides with motherboard. ALSO please be aware, pcie slot is only x8 and does NOT support bifurcation. System will talk only to first nvme port. You can buy a card with pcie switch but those are pretty expensive & rare & buggy (from my experience)

    I have seen MINISFORUM machines for quite some time and used several of them in my (cough, undisclosed) applications. They are indeed truly impressive. What I do like about them is that they are power-houses where needed. They tick a lot of boxes for me, and the prices are fair. Using it as a NAS is not really what I have thought off before but worth considering. Thank you for pointing that out!

    If you wanted to use the MS-01 as a NAS, IMO the best way to go about it would be to install a LSI SAS card, install a couple NVMe drives, install Proxmox with the NVMe drives in a RAIDZ1 just for redundancy, create a TrueNAS Scale VM, and use PCIe passthrough to pass the LSI SAS card and one (or both) of the 10 Gbps SFP+ ports to the TrueNAS Scale VM. Then, connect the SAS card to a SAS disk shelf and setup your ZFS pool(s) in TrueNAS Scale. This way you still have the space and headroom to create a bunch of VMs in Proxmox and such, as frankly, the power of the MS-01 is kind of wasted if all you're doing with it is a NAS, and I don't think TrueNAS is necessarily the best platform for hosting VMs and Docker containers. On my MS-01, I've got Proxmox on it, but I am trying to sort out Intel AMT remote management with MeshCentral. MeshCommander remote KVM works fine but MeshCentral remote KVM is tricky to get working for me.

  • @tommybronze3451
    @tommybronze3451 5 часов назад

    Actually there are 4 nvme ports on it :) the wifi port can be used for 2230 A+E vnme or with a 15£ extension cable (that converts A+E to B key) that allows you to put your 2280 somewhere else, you get access to 2x pcie 2 speed at which boot drives are just perfect there (and yes, this is tested, supports secure boot etc - this is how my nodes boot and work without a problem) Bottom line is that this is perfect for ceph NVME storage + a lot of horse power for vm / containers. Answering further questions: yes hybrid CPU works just fine with proxmox 8, there are no real problems with it, yes the iris graphics inside of the CPU works without a problem, no there is no hardware watchdog, no there is no TPM, x710 ports work perfect with LACP so do 2.5gb ports, connect those directly to SFP switch to lower the heat and power consumption, the PCIE slot is only pcie4 x8 but it many LSI HBA cards fit into that, do not underestimate the USB-C DAS docks - those do work pretty fast with this puppy and so far had pose no issues for us (and consume far less power than HBA + external psu for sata (also less messy), CPU is rather ludicrous fast and for 30 empty VM's inside of proxmox in a cluster we experienced average 0,4% cpu usage (the AES accelerators etc help a lot!). BUT bare in mind that this is a miniPC not a enterprise grade server, so if you get kernel crash of memory corruption - don't come out crying that this is S*** because it works for other people - rather than investing an arm and leg into enterprise server that will cost a pretty penny and suck electricity out of socket like mad, get few of those and create distributed filesystem where corruption on one node will be found later on and fixed with clean copy from non corrupt node. BTW, a note about the 2 lanes of pcie3 for third NVME slot - let's face it, it's more than double 10GBe can handle, so there is no real problem here. You simply can't push data fast enough into this system for this to be a bottle neck. Yes your array rebuild speed will suffer ,HOWEVER, most nvme WILL throttle after few gigabytes of writes as those will saturate the ssd buffer and speeds will drop well below pcie3x2 speeds - negating any pcie speeds. BTW 2, using pcie slot for extending storage with 2 NVME is a no go. The slot does not support bifurcation so system will see only a single nvme drive the extender card. There are cards that have internal PCIE switch that will do bifurcation, but those come mostly in 4 drive combo that will unfortunately NOT fit within the case.

      @@nascompares No probs mate, luckily this box has a group of maniacs working on weird things on it :) I'm waiting for somebody fitting infiniband on it for shits and giggles :D BTW, maybe, just maybe - get your self two usb-c 40Gb hubs, and 8 usb-c enclosures and test it with this puppy. People keep snuffing at those, but I think those are underestimated and "normal" users are not even aware of those and just jump straight into enterprise HBA (which has it's own issues).

    • @russellmm

      Ableconn and Startech both make a Dual M.2 (with a PCI switch) that fit in this. If you are daring and want something at half the price, ULANSeN makes one but it's too long due to the 22110 support. However, If you only need it for 2280, I do not think there is signaling down at the end so you can probably just cut the PCB off after the 2280 connection point.

    • @tommybronze3451
      @tommybronze3451 2 часа назад

      @@russellmm As I said "but those come mostly in 4", but thank you for the into. I don't need it right now, but could you please provide some part numbers so maybe myself in the future or others can use those ? Now this is a complete offtopic, but IF one would use the pcie slot, then they're stuck with max 20Gb uplink so having uber fast link to nvme is pointless. Have you seen any cards / application that would use pcie switch that will take for example x8 pcie4 and give out 8 pice4 x1 nvme ports ? Asking becuase even a single lane of pcie4 already gives 20Gb throughput so one can slam multiple nvme onto single enclosure. I don't think I would do that, I would prefer to spread out storage among multiple nodes but "there are some tinkerers out there"

    well i think its because the n2 is very much designed to be a NAS, NOT a home server, which it seems everyone considers a NAS as a home server these days, its just meant for putting a mobo like an n100 in and then just throwing some drives into, nothing more, nothing less, its not meant for putting a powerful hot cpus and running plex servers or vms so it doesnt need that room for putting in gpus, and other full length cards the most you would put into it is maybe a 10g nic if you are too lazy to use a switch to turn the 4 2.5g ports into a 10g connection

    Anyone who's building PC's should already have a toolkit with allen key bits, surely. Getting hung up on one of those seems a little over the top. Either way, nice case, seems like an iron plated pain in the posterior to get one after a quick look around. A Supermicro Mini-ITX mobo with an Atom processor on would be a great combo with this, some come with 12 SATA ports. My main concern about this case are all those small and thus noisy fans. I'd have liked to see a big-ass 20 cm fan on the rear or something to suck air through the whole thing.

    I do take exception with the statement of "Synology's do not support them", its not that Synology does not support specific HDD's, RAM or NVMe's. As they do support them - all drives, RAM, NVMe etc follow strict industry standards, and that is baked into the Linux kernel. No, the real issue is, Synology trying evey trick to discourage this, in efforts to upsell their own branded components... which let face it, they don't actually create, they are just generic components with a Synology sticker on it,... then sold with a 300-400% mark-up.

    😭Finally figured out my issue. If you have issues with Plex detecting the iGPU for hardware transcoding, you need to run Plex as Privileged mode. He said to leave it disabled if you don't know what you're doing but you NEED it for Hardware Transcoding.

    I have malware on top of the qlocker files. So, my files have this extention: .7z.deadbolt. Is there a way to remove the .deadbolt then run the qrescue to remove the .7z?

    Does anyone know why mine is requireing the Container run command to be populated? It was skipped over in the video and people have been saying that it should be left empty. Any ideas on how to fix that? I can't get it to work and i think it has something to do with this command

    I bought a second-hand 10TB Ultrastar-HCC510 - and then "by habit" tested it on a Desktop - with a 2021-model Motherboard from Asus. .. And, you will probably correct me - but, I was surpriced to discover, that it was not recognized. I then updated my bios to the latest - same result.. I then got anxious - had the person sold a faulty drive to me... But .. - sorry, a Seagull distracted me, for a moment (I needed to load my shotgun, and try to hit it😎 - which succeeded after some shots .. now I await the local police, since it is Denmark) - .. it works 100% on my NAS'es (Terramaster, Qnap). Being an amateur, and not having tried to put an "enterprise hdd" into a Desktop-PC before - I was surpriced! And, especially surpriced, because the drive is old, and could have been testes, by someone else, before me. (As it is, now, I have written to Asus - because, it is very okay, as an upgrade - to my PC's 4TB file-storage & backup-drive (bought back in 2014 !!)). [regarding old drives (2014): I am triple-securing /backing-up all my data - so a failing HDD is not a (big/essential) problem for me... on my desktops] [actually, I have not had a HDD failing, since 1999...] [my oldest drives, currently still in use, is bought back in 2009! (!)]

    Important thing to consider is that Ugreen is a Chinese company completely subordinate to the Chinese Communist Party. It doesn't matter what the company says or thinks about this party control. Chinese law dictates this subordinance. It's lunacy to give full access to all your files and have it connected to Internet. The NAS literally can scan and analyze all files and photos to then send all relevant data to China for it to have thumb on any person who have Ugreen NAS.

    the UGREEN software is enough for most people. It's a superior NAS end of story.

    Indeed, as an avid Mac user, OWC is not unknown to me. Their kit is often good quality, documentation/assistance is good too, in my experiences. But they are not cheap, I guess quality has a price. The good news is that OWC often has local resellers who are able to assist & provide guidance/information where needed. (in my experiences) I guess the future "battles" will be for those vendors who provide storage solutions on top of TrueNAS, which is not a bad thing IMHO.

    I just picked one up and is on the way. The amount of critical vulnerabilities the competition has in their hardware/software is insane and a little worrying. It's nice seeing that Synology actually has a bug bounty program as well. What good is the competition hardware if your data isn't safe? I don't plan on using this for Plex and purely backups. Not to mention the software for backups seems easy, straight forward and exactly what I need and want.
